Sydney

I've been in New Zealand and Australia for some DJ gigs which is why there's not been another single uploaded - I have to complete the artwork (note: I know I also have to correct a date on the artwork for Hand In Glove, too).

I was pleasantly surprised to find this display a couple of days ago in Egg Records, 3 Wilson Street, Newtown, Sydney. I didn't use my flash in the store, but you get the idea.

I didn't buy any of them...I've mostly been scouting for OOP Split Enz, Crowded House, and Severed Heads releases. :)

  3. Lovely stuff. These are sheer works of art.

I've often wondered why, after a strong start to his solo career with great covers for Viva Hate, Suedehead, EDILS, Interesting Drug (at a stretch) Moz's solo covers went so very, very wrong?

  5. Severed Heads!! I always wanted to hear the other versions of "Bad Mood Guy" - all I have is the CD version from 1987 (Canadian?). Such a good band. There was an Aussie version of the album, and then much later a reconstruction/deconstruction edition too, right?

  7. @Jason - yes, during the late '90s/early '00s when Tom was doing handmade distribution he remastered the album and altered it slightly. It's worth investigating.

  8. I picked up Split Enz's LP (the one with "I Got You", their only UK hit single, on it) for a few quid in a market stall several years ago. Imagine my surprise when I took the record out of its sleeve...My first thought was "it looks beautiful, but will playing this thing damage the stylus?"

Now, this made me think of The Smiths and their vinyls. While The Smiths never did anything quite as psychedelic as Split Enz with the actual vinyl, what I do recall is that almost every Smiths vinyl release had some wonderfully witty groove notations etched between the run-off grooves. "Aesthetics Vs Athletics" and "Romantic and Square Is Hip And Aware" are two of my favourites.
And I was just thinking, seeing as this project is on hold for a while, would it be possible to include these groove notations as part of the artwork? For example, you could print them around the circumference of the CD labels? Just a random idea. What do you think?

  9. I'm a big fan of your blogs, and a huge fan of Severed Heads. Any chance you are doing anything with Severed Heads vinyl?
